Marc Marquez was the best rider of his era but his era has passed and I want him to retire.

He began his World Championship racing career age just 15. By the time he was 26 he was an 8 times world champion. Right from the off he was incredibly fast and spectacular to watch on the bike. He was all-action aggressive and always excitement and drama every race (apart from that one race that wrecked his reputation, but that’s another story).

His riding style along with his ruthless mentality that brought him the spectacular results have also been the reason he crashed so much during practice sessions. His mind-set was always to find the limit of the bike, for him that meant pushing beyond the limit until he crashed. He avoided injury in many of his crashes. However, there have been crashes that he was not so fortunate. In the lower classes he badly damaged his eye.

Marquez’s latest injury trouble started back in 2020 when he broke an arm at the Jerez race. Like many riders, their aim is to return to racing at record speed. The physios are amazing nowadays; hyperbaric chambers speed up the healing but Marc is more determined and focused than any rider of his generation. He actually tried to return to race the next weekend! It did not work out. He then re broke the arm just opening a window at home. A crash in training on a motocross bike while recovering then caused the old eye injury to flare up so he was out of action once again. He eventually returned to racing but the result were nothing like his previous ones. He then decided to go for a third operation to re-break the arm and have it completely reset. This was a last ditch attempt to give him full movement back. The surgeon told him the arm would not stand another break.

He has spent most race weekend crashing numerous times in practices. He has crashed in races and caused injuries to other riders. Marquez is still ruthless and aggressive but now has become desperate and dangerous in his quest to win races. He is now a damaged 30-year-old trying to replicate his glory days but he has punished his body and it is now showing the signs.

Today at Silverstone he finished 18th in the sprint race. Tomorrow is the British Grand prix main event and I don’t see him ben able to get into the top 10. Almost unthinkable just a few years ago when he was dominant and so much better than the rest

The signs of his desperation are already there that this is not going to end well for him. Marc Marquez could have another 50 years of life. He recently found a girlfriend, moved to a new city, he has millions in the bank.

I want him to retire while he is can and make the choice instead of disability or worse deciding for him.
