As a diehard lifelong biker I never imagined being remotely attracted in anything to do with electric bikes BUT in the last couple of years Black Tea Motorbikes in Germany has me interested.

I’m in my early 50’s and have been motorbike mad since I was 6 years old.
What is it about being a biker I love so much? Riding them and the sense of freedom is the simplest answer.
To elaborate more….the roar of the engine, the scream of the exhaust, blue smoke and the beautiful smell of two-stroke fumes were a big part of it initially.
Then the variety of styles from custom, superbike, retro, off-road to naked street bikes.
Another big part is the clothing, the helmets, the accessories and other kit. Not forgetting the lifestyle, the culture, the sport, music and movies associated with bikes. It is also community, camaraderie, places to ride and hang out with like-minded people.
I have followed Viktor Sommers project from the early days as a start-up. I have watched his progress through his updates, videos and excellent communications.

The main reason I love Black Tea motorbikes is that the retro styling of a cool 70’s style scrambler looks amazing (a retro clock would be perfect!). The superb looking Bonfire X is a minimal coloured tank, simple seat, nice wide bars and two wheels with knobbly tyres makes it Steve McQueen cool!
The ‘engine’ is not the focus and because of that, I do not feel the switch out to a battery has damaged the look; it still looks like the type of bikes I loved, even as a kid. Most electric models have focussed on a ‘futuristic’ design which turns most bikers away because it is the antithesis of what my generation loved about bikes. Although it is not needed Viktor has stuck a tank on and that is genius! Too many new bikes have become disappointing in style due to plastic body parts stuck on, reminding me more of something from the Transformers movie than a bike.
125cc performance and can commute around towns and cities on a single charge with zero emission, at almost zero cost. Black Tea motorbikes have grabbed from the past, the Bonfires remind people my age and older of bikes we grew up with.
I think it was a brilliant way to go and I hope this is a huge success. The planet needs this project to work. I wish I had the spare room and cash because I would love one to run around on.
I just realised the only part of motorcycling I don’t like is filling up with fuel and paying for it.
Over 48% of us Britons voted to remain in the EU, we are a nation that still welcomes products from every country and that will never stop.

Owning an electric bike still keeps you in the biker community and many of the aspects are always still there….just without the noise and pollution. I can live with that!
